Year-round climate control that can be reconfigured as the working areas change

An electronics production facility needed reliable heating and cooling across its working areas throughout the year, delivered in a way that would not have to be torn out if the layout changed. We installed a multi-split system using ceiling cassette units.

The challenge

Production areas need conditions to stay steady regardless of the weather outside. A space that overheats in July and is cold in January is a problem for the people working in it and for the consistency of what comes off the line. The requirement was heating and cooling from one system, working year-round rather than seasonally.

The second requirement was less obvious, but it shaped the design more. The client expected the way the floor was divided into working areas to change over time, and did not want a climate system that assumed today’s layout was permanent.

Site constraints

Floor space in a production environment is working space. Anything standing on it is in the way, and anything mounted at low level is exposed to knocks and to being blocked by whatever gets stacked in front of it. That pointed to equipment at ceiling level, out of the working plane entirely.

Our solution

A multi-split system — several indoor units served from shared outdoor plant — using ceiling cassette units that sit flush into the ceiling and distribute air evenly across an open floor, rather than blowing it across the room from one wall.

Because each indoor unit serves its own area, the system does not depend on the floor staying laid out as it was on the day of installation. If the client later divides the space differently, the units can be controlled to suit the new arrangement instead of the system needing to be replaced.

Equipment and approach

Ceiling cassettes providing both heating and cooling from the same units, so the facility has one system to run and to maintain rather than separate provision for summer and winter. Multi-split configuration keeps the number of outdoor units down, which matters where external space is limited.

Result

Year-round climate control across the production areas, with the flexibility to change how those areas are divided without starting again on the system that conditions them.
